Answer
You don't. You buy them from M$ or from a reseller.

Or you can download Linux for free, burn the ISO to a disk and start using free software legally. But I don't think you are bothered by such questions as doing things legally.

how do i get linux operating system? wer can i download it from for free?

i want to use linux and get rid of microsoft windows xp.

Answer
There's a lot of different Linux distros, you should try a few of them and decide which one you like. Since you mentioned in your previous question that you only have 128MB of RAM, I suggest you go with either Damn Small Linux or Puppy Linux:

Damn Small Linux:

Puppy Linux:

A few other popular distros are:

Ubuntu:

Fedora:

Linux Mint:

Mandriva:

Debian:

OpenSUSE:

What's the Linux distro with most software available to download for free (if there's) with best support?

Tell me if there's any Linux distro with most no. of software available to download for free with excellent support. I just need a Linux based system that I can use as a replacement for Windows. More software available for free as an all-purpose system (like Windows), especially for educational, office use & multimedia-related tasks. Not crashing often is also a must.

Answer
Without doubt Debian. The repository is vast.

I thoroughly recommend Linux Mint Debian Edition Its easy to install and easy to use plus it comes with much of the software you are likely to need preinstalled

You download the ISO. image of Linux Mint Debian Edition then you need to create a Bootable LiveDVD

Linux Mint Debian Edition can also be run straight from the LiveDVD from Boot without touching your Hard Drive
