Q. In applications) internet) transmission bit torrent client) the files report idle, but I know it works because I can test it on another computer using Windows.

I just told you the answer!
Install wine then install Bittorrent or uTorrent
BTW bittorrent has ported to linux and you can find it in synaptic (System -> Administration -> Synaptic Package Manager) but it is totally different to what you are used to. I would use wine to get iuTorrent.
But I just told you this. There is another good torrent downloaded that is the best linux distros have to offer which is ktorrent but it is a KDE application. It will work in gnome but will need some dependencies to do so.

Take a look at installing Ubuntu 9.04 using Wubi installer

Using Wubi there is no need to burn a disc. as Ubuntu installs direct from the iso. image
You keep Windows as it is, Wubi only adds an extra option to boot into Ubuntu. Wubi does not require you to modify the partitions of your PC, or to use a different bootloader, and does not install special drivers. It works just like any other application.
Wubi keeps most of the files in one folder, and if you do not like it, you can simply uninstall it as any other application.

Ubuntu does not have limewire in its repository but it does have many other bit torrent clients; which lime wire is.
If you go to allmyapps.com and search for p2p you will find 26 file downloaders. They are all free. Try them and see what you like. If you look at the right side of the page you will find any reviews and how many times it has been downloaded; a good sign of how good/popular it is.
