Answer
By "lite" Linux desktop, I assume you mean that it runs fast.

On my 9y/o PC, I installed the Fluxbox version of Linux Mint 6. Linux Mint is based off of Ubuntu (Which is based off of Debian). My PC has these specs:
-1.8GHz P4 Process
-256RAM
-64MB Nvidia Video card
-80GB IDE Hard Drive.

Fluxbox runs way faster then Windows XP did! Also, like you said you wanted, it comes with Firefox & Thunderbird. And since it's a new OS, bugs/patches/updates are released every few hours.

I highly suggest Linux Mint 6 Fluxbox if you are looking for a fast, and up-to-date OS for an old OC.

Just go over to http://linuxmint.com/ select the version you want to download. Download the .iso file, and burn it to a CD! It's very easy, and you have the option of running it Live!

Good day. Hope I helped some! :-)
